I Wrote About Sharbat Gula for Evergreen Review

In a way, I have wanted to write about Sharbat Gula–otherwise known as “Afghan Girl”–since the first time I saw her face on the cover of National Geographic.

Finally, one of my favourite places to write for, the storied Evergreen Review, gave me the opportunity. Many thanks to ER and Dale Peck, whose encouragement has always led to some of my most experimental pieces.

You can read the piece, “Sharbat Gula Is Not Lost,” here. I also appeared on the Current Affairs podcast to talk about the piece and Afghanistan and you can find that here.
