Daily Posts, July 24-28

Every weekday, I post–on FacebookTwitter, and Instagram–an essay from my archive (sometimes more than one), along with new work published that week. I realised it might make sense to compile these links at the end of every week, so that readers who missed them at the time can catch up. This is the third in the series.

You’re welcome to follow me on any of the above-mentioned social media platforms, but please note that I’m no longer accepting new friend requests on FB, unless I’ve met you and know you personally. You can, however, still follow me there without us directly “friending” each other.

I wrote TWO new essays this part week, part of a quartet of collaboration with the writer Sarah Miller.

A Bestiary in Silks: Fashion and Race in And Just Like That.

and

The Style It Takes or, The Difference Between Style and Fashion

It’s been an exhausting week for a couple of reasons and I also wanted to boost these two essays along with Sarah’s as much as I could, so I mostly just posted them over and over again.

DACA Was Always DOA.”

Democracy Now did two segments about the use of animals by cops and in prisons, and they’re really worth watching. I offer my Current Affairs essay on “Racism and the American Pit Bull” as a complement to the discussions.
You can read my essay here.

Sinéad O’Connor died suddenly, at the age of 56. This video, of “Nothing Compares to You,” is one I watch often, over and over. Interestingly, I can recall actively disliking O’Connor at the time, irritated by the wide-eyed ingenue look and manner. Apparently, she too hated all of it, and the attendant demands of stardom. Everything changes.

And, as always, if you’d like to know more about my work, start here: “A Manifesto.” For more, just peruse this website, using the search box (I’m still uploading older work).

If you’d like to support me to ensure that I keep producing work that’s truly independent, isn’t concerned with “hot takes,” and that takes actual real intellectual risks, you can support me in a number of ways.

I may take a week off here and there this summer but, otherwise, onwards. Stay well, and in the shade.
